Is Global Over-population a Reality

Mother Earth is estimated to be 4.5 billion years old, residing within the boundaries of a Universe that has been in existence for more than 16 billion years.  Most people simply cannot relate to the magnitude of these numbers, however, one thing is clear – IT’S A LOT.  Archaeologists, over the years, have dug up skeletal material – animals and even some humanoids, that have been carbon dated back 1 – 2 million years, in some instances.  And even the oldest discoveries of anything – rocks, minerals, etc do not exceed 10 million years.  This means that the discovery time period from which we work  is less than 2/10th of 1%  of the age of the earth.

Modern man, such as we know him, appeared on the scene approximately 10,000 years ago – although in New Guinea, word is that the Asmat tribe has been living in that region for over 40,000 years.   Nonetheless, the 10,000 year time period  coincides with  creationist theories espoused in the Bible.  For simplicity, let’s leap forward to the beginning of what’s known as A.D –  Anno Domini.  Scholars and historians prefer to use the less sectarian designation C.E or Common Era.  Whatever your preference, it took the world just about 2000 years to achieve a population size that exceeded 1/2 billion people.  Worldwide census records tell us that  world population in the year 1900 was  566  million people,   Wow!

Now it gets interesting.   From 1900 to 2014 – a span of 114 years, the world’s population expanded from a paltry 1/2 billion to over 7 billion – doubling the 1900 base  a whopping 14 times in less than 120 years.  Do we now have your attention?  What’s even more interesting is that the last (full) doubling occurred in less than 50 years – in 1967, world population was 3.5 billion.   The earth is a finite entity – both in size and it’s ability to provide and support needed resources.  Scientific projections indicate that at  current  technological levels, the earth will max out in it’s ability to  support and sustain a population level of any number over 10 billion; actually the squeeze begins at around 9 billion and progressively worsens from that point forward

This should not be a surprise to anyone – I am not breaking new ground here.  Thomas Malthus outlined his thoughts on this subject over 200 years ago in An Essay on the Principles of Population.   In 1968 Dr Paul Ehrlich wrote The Population Bomb, a searing tale of malnutrition and death from starvation.  His prediction (in 1968) was “… hundreds of millions of people worldwide will die from hunger…”     Dr Ehrlich was correct on two counts – a) today over 1 billion people are suffering from severe malnutrition; b) the Population Bomb has essentially exploded.  Live Science has been plowing through this global catastrophe for quite some time ; take a look at some of their findings and positions, they are mind boggling.

The big question then is – Why aren’t we hearing more about this pending problem.  Is it because most of those malnourished individuals live in 3rd world countries.  Is it possible that the power brokers of the world have decided that the best way to curb this population explosion is to simply starve the masses.  They ( the masses) would essentially solve the problem.  With no/limited ability to sustain themselves, they would simply die and with limited or no replacements, the population problem is suddenly solved.  Religion and government also seem to be  at odds with this problem.  World Health Organization (WHO), in their attempts to curb birth rates in 3rd world countries through use of birth control, find their efforts thwarted by counter arguments from the Church.  Birth Control is a sin and should not be practiced.  Amazing!

Clearly, there is a problem – the math simply does not work.  Whether the number is 9 Billion  or 19 Billion and even if we cut the growth rate in half, unless we find a way to inhabit and sustain human life on another planet, there is an end game in the making for life as we know it on planet Earth.  Ever notice that 9 out of 10 of all futuristic movies out of Hollywood depict a world in which we would never want to live?  Maybe Hollywood is trying to send a message – one to which we are not paying attention.  Most recently, a movie, entitled, The Purge, depicted the country (USA) in 2022, with a law firmly in place that once/year allowed anyone to kill anyone – no questions asked, no reasons given and without fear of retribution.  The idea was that the masses would be given an opportunity to unleash their animal instincts and  do what came naturally – KILL..  The intended consequence of this law was to “purge”/reduce/eliminate the poorer sections of our society, making life easier for the , well  y’know – daaa! Where have we heard that before, I wonder.

There is a continuation to this dilemma.

Population is a real threat to Mother Earth and there is no doubt about it. If human beings doesn't think of a way to control their feelings, then there won't be nothing much left to feel about. I believe we are already too late, but there are slim chances that humanity can save the planet by sacrificing what is needed to be sacrificed.

Actually, it's happening already. It's quite alarming because this could lead to other problems that if left unattended, could branch out more problems in the near future. Over-population is a real problem we are all facing right now. If we don't make some changes about our actions and will keep the "I don't care" attitude, expect worst things to come. That's the consequence of not caring for the environment. If left unattended, you will have to suffer.

    About the Author

I was raised in a system governed by the British. I enjoyed my early years, as a kid growing up in Jamaica, West Indies, but always considered myself to be a thoughtful person, more concerned with understanding the accuracy of an issue – any issue, and less with the categorization of right vs wrong, good vs bad.  I never really understood why I thought along those lines – I just did.  However, as I matured I discovered that the essence of this thought process was the first step in my commitment to achieving a fair and balanced evaluation of events, as they occurred.

For me, Right and Wrong always seemed to be relative to something else.   Albeit that there may be some events that are unequivocal in their absoluteness, most issues tend to bounce between the two (right or wrong/good or bad) extremes, depending on the perspective/paradigm used to evaluate them.  Consequently, the end result for most of these conclusions is in that murky grey, middle area.

In creating this Blog, I am committed to focusing on an objective evaluation of whatever issue I bring forward.  I will endeavor to keep to a minimum any personal preferences, paradigm influences and emotions, in my evaluative efforts.

I welcome comments and criticism from anyone who accesses my site.  I will also make every attempt to provide a timely response to those comments.

Thank you for reading and I hope you find the articles amusing, at the least, enlightening at best.
