In August we embarked on one of these excursions, entitled – The British Isles Explorer, on board the 6 month old VIKING SUN. Quite aside from the fact that the ship was new, Viking spared no expense in putting together a floating 5 Star Hotel. The amenities and the services were extraordinary, these to include spectacular meals in four (4) selective restaurants, a fitness center with all the latest equipment, a Spa designed exclusively for your comfort and enjoyment and last but not least entertainment at night - stage presentations, cinemas and of course a night club.

![]() ... as the veils of emotional outbursts begin to settle and the waves of rage recede, we need to take a clear and objective look at what got us to where we are, today, what were the drivers and who - collectively, were those responsible. The Media is the first element that springs to mind. For the last 18 months, the main talking channels - Fox News, MSNBC and CNN have inundated our homes with a barrage of dis-information - some would call it opinions, others, just plain trash. Either way it was almost impossible to step away from this. At it's worst, the output was slanted - for the particular party supported, against everything and everyone else. Mattered not that the information was spun and positioned, it poured forward, unceasingly. Stations promoted or ignored candidates based solely on ratings - the bigger the perceived draw, the more often that candidate appeared. That said, Donald Trump rated # 1 and basked in the glory of continual media coverage. What I'm about to share will undoubtedly infuriate a lot of people, however I think it needs to be said and accept it or not, it's a reality we live with every day. So, here goes ...
It should come as no surprise to anyone that, over the past 5 years, we have witnessed a raft of police shootings, nationwide, resulting in the death of dozens of unarmed men, women and kids. Albeit that there are white males and an occasional female on the list, the preponderance of these victims are young black men (YBM's). The police and the media would have us believe that these individuals - with emphasis on the YBM's, were all thugs, crime driven individuals, a plague on society and well deserving of the fate handed out to them by well trained, professional police officers, committed to their motto - To Protect and To Serve. This position is undoubtedly not true and subsequent events, as they unfold over time clearly demonstrate the fallacy of the media hype.
The pilgrimage to Santiago started over 1000 years ago. People from all across Europe traveled to Camino de Santiago, Spain, the burial site of Apostle St. James the Great. For more on the history of this magnificent journey, visit the following web site.
Inspired by the movie, The Way, starring Martin Sheen, my wife and I decided to make the trip and we were not disappointed. As we prepare to face the onslaught of yet another death of a black – (in this instance, a) woman, at the hands of law enforcement officers, the question cries out for a meaningful response – When will this bizarre behavior come to an end. Is this the new normal? But wait, this is not new; it’s reminiscent of times past – a return to the old, if you will.
As we prepare to bury two more victims of violent crime – in this instance they happen to be police officers, we really need to come to grips with the circumstances that continue to perpetuate the cycle of violence. We need to understand that every Action will ultimately bring about (at some point) a Re-action. This is pretty much Standard Stuff; in some cases it is called revenge, in other instances, retribution – and there are numerous other tags, but they all mean the same thing. Having said that, re-actions are invariably never good. They are usually emotionally charged and even after the emotion has subsided, any factual support is all too often totally lacking.
Much like abortion, discussions – sometimes heated, circulating around the death penalty, have been with us for a very long time. Michigan was the first state to abolish the death penalty for all crimes except treason. This was in 1846 – Rhode Island and Wisconsin followed in short order for all crimes; but there was really never a lot of discussion about these States’ decisions.

![]() In my Post on Global Over- Population, I outlined the general statistics on the ages of the Universe and Earth. I cannot find any concrete references to data on Earth that predates more than a few million years. Yet we know from science that the time elapse of 4.5 billion years did occur. Therefore, the million dollar question is – what transpired over those many, many years. The predicament we potentially face, as we come to grips with a population growth that is set to outstrip Earth’s ability to sustain that many people, has given rise to some speculation on my part – and I stress speculation because that’s all this is. Nonetheless, kick it around and see if there’s any shred of possibility buried in there, somewhere. |
About the AuthorI was raised in a system governed by the British. I enjoyed my early years, as a kid growing up in Jamaica, West Indies, but always considered myself to be a thoughtful person, more concerned with understanding the accuracy of an issue – any issue, and less with the categorization of right vs wrong, good vs bad. I never really understood why I thought along those lines – I just did. However, as I matured I discovered that the essence of this thought process was the first step in my commitment to achieving a fair and balanced evaluation of events, as they occurred. Archives
